  • FROZEN vs FRESH vs VEGETABLES FROM YOUR GARDEN

Posted on January 3rd, 2011 Pam No comments

Did you know that frozen vegetables are better for you than fresh vegetables from the store? It turns out that frozen vegetables are picked when they are ripe and ready to harvest. The frozen vegetables are processed right away, while ‘fresh’ vegetables are picked way before they are mature. Then they are shipped to the grocery store that may take up to two weeks. Then the ‘fresh’ vegetables may stay in your crisper for a few more days. Not so fresh huh?

Well, according to “The Doctors”, (a television program), ‘fresh’ vegetables like beans and spinach can lose 75% of Vitamain C after one week in storage. They suggest using the farmers market, or buying from local growers. That is a good idea, but some farmers markets also ship vegetables in from other states. They may be fresher than the grocery store, but still not as fresh as ‘home grown’ vegetables.

As the trend toward ‘organic gardening’ continues to build, consider being your own source of organic food. As this new year stimulates change, give gardening a try. Imagine growing your own vegetables in your own garden and vegetables that have wonderful flavor. Not to mention being able to walk outside and pick several vegetables for a dinner salad which can’t be any fresher.
