Peppers are measured by a Scoville scale, the larger the number the hotter the pepper. The Scoville scale measures the hotness of the pepper by the amount of capsaicin it has.
Listed below is a list of a few peppers and how they are listed on the Scoville scale. The ones in bold are the varieties I will try.Sweet bell pepper – 0
Sweet Banana – 0
Anaheim – 500 – 2,500
Jalapeno – 2,500 – 5,000
Hot Wax – 5,000 – 10,000
Serrano – 10,000 – 23,000
Cayenne – 30,000 – 50,000
Jamican Chocolate – 100,000 – 200,000
Habanero – 100,000 to 350,000
Yellow Scotch Bonnet – 350,000
Red Savina – 577,000
Dorset Naga – 923,000 194 times hotter than jalapeno
BHUT Jolokia – 1,000,000 holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s hottest pepper.
Common pepper spray – 2,000,000
Pure capsaicin – 16,000,000NOTE: When planting peppers, the hot peppers may cross with the mild peppers. So it is a good idea to seperate the ‘hot & cold’ peppers. Even if the ‘meat’ of the pepper isn’t affected, the seeds will be. And we all know the ‘kick’ of the pepper is all in the seeds.
